Spring courses

Spring (semester) is here!! Dr. Sandefur’s classes this spring are introductory biology (lecture), genetics (lecture and lab) and microbiology (lab only). He’ll be using POGIL in his intro bio course as well as provide an introduction to reading and critically analyzing primary scientific literature. Genetics lecture will revolve around a published case study of a […]

SNCURCS

The Sandefur Lab made its first conference appearance a few days ago at the State of North Carolina Undergraduate Research and Creativity Symposium (SNCURCS). The symposium was held at High Point University, which was beautifully decorated for the winter holidays. Lab member Tyler Moore (Biology, senior) presented on his modeling of fast DNA-protein binding dynamics.

New Sandefur Lab arrival

Sandefur Lab PI Conner Sandefur and his wife Brittany welcomed the arrival of their daughter Betty Louise on September 21.

Funded STEM outreach project (Trickster)!

The Sandefur Lab recently received funding from the Duke Energy Foundation to develop and implement the Trickster Modeling Workshop at high schools around UNC-Pembroke! We are excited about this opportunity and look forward to reporting back on our experiences. Please contact Dr. Sandefur if you are interested in learning more and/or getting involved.

Research Opportunities in the Sandefur Lab

The Sandefur Lab: Exploring how small changes can make a big difference. Current projects in the Sandefur Lab fall into two main categories: systems biology and integrative course design. Systems biology projects are directed at investigating diseases that impact rural communities, with a particular focus on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and diabetes. There is […]

Fall Courses

Fall classes are about to begin at UNCP! My classes this fall are genetics (lecture and lab) and microbiology (lab only). I’m excited to try out Socrative for in-class real time polling. My syllabi are available below. Course materials available for interested instructors, just shoot me an email. Principles of Genetics Lab Syllabus Principles of […]

Trickster Modeling Workshop

Earlier today I had the opportunity to participate in a summer camp for American Indian high school students (Safeguarding our Natural and Tribal Heritage Youth Program funded by the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service). I was particularly excited because it allowed me a chance to do a workshop called Trickster Modeling. The basic idea […]

New faculty position

I’m excited to post news that I’ll be joining the faculty in the Department of Biology at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke this fall. In preparation for this new position, don’t be surprised if you see some changes on this website, which will be transitioned from my individual site to the new Sandefur Lab […]

Visit us at NCAS

We will be at the North Carolina Academy of Science conference this weekend at Wake Forest Biotech Place. UNC-Pembroke senior and Biology major Marcus will be sharing results found using his Python pipeline, which is being designed to characterize gene expression sets using Gene Ontology as well as query publicly available databases for pathway enrichment. At NCAS, […]

ABRCMS Award!

We were very happy to receive a  “Meritorious Award for Distinguished Presentation in Molecular and Computational Biology” at this year’s ABRCMS (Annual Biomedical Conference for Minority Students) conference!  Congratulations goes to  Marcus Sherman who placed in the top against 109 other presenters! Marcus presented our work on functional analysis of early versus delayed gene expression in a […]
